First, the instant you've broken the opponent's posture from guard. Whether from closed guard or open guard, once the attacker has already broken the opponent's upright posture with a collar, sleeve, or overhook grip, and the opponent's arm hasn't yet cleared out of range, that's the cleanest moment to swing the leg over.

Second, when an opponent passes half guard with a tripod stance. Passing half guard often calls for a tripod stance, which shifts the opponent's weight forward and exposes the arm to attack, letting the attacker finish the omoplata with the top leg.

Third, as a chain off a failed triangle or armbar. First, pull the threatened arm free early and keep your posture upright. As long as the defender maintains an upright posture before the attacker swings the leg over, there's still a window to clear the threatened arm before it's fully trapped.

Second, roll forward. This is the most common live-rolling escape: the defender rolls forward in the direction of the lock to release the pressure building on the shoulder joint.

Third, step over the trapping leg. Bring the free leg across the attacker's body to change the relative angle between both athletes, while also tucking the elbow tight against your own thigh to shrink the space the attacker can leverage.

The follow-up when the opponent rolls forward to escape

When the defender chooses to roll forward, if the attacker wraps an arm around the opponent's hip and rolls along with them, that roll usually doesn't actually let the opponent escape. It instead delivers the attacker straight to the opponent's back or side, converting into a back take or side control rather than losing the position for nothing.

If the defender stays upright and successfully pulls the arm free, the attacker is typically still well within range of the opponent's guard and can flow directly into a triangle or armbar attempt without having to reset.

Can white belts use the omoplata?

Is the omoplata a joint lock or a choke?
