I heard the aid stations at Zhaocha Trail serve great food, so naturally I analysed the course instead. Seriously though: I took the 4,132 track points of the 2026 Zhaocha Trail 12K Tea-Picker course, joined them to ASTER GDEM 30 m elevation data, and computed distance, elevation, gradient, runnability, fatigue weighting and bail-out distance segment by segment. The headline first: this is an "easy on the flanks, steep through the middle" route through the Pinglin tea country with 527 m of total climbing. The cut-off is generous, but 6.6% of the distance sits above a 20% gradient, so it is not a pure beginner's course.
1. Course Dashboard
The "vertical ratio" is the trail world's rough difficulty index: <20 easy, 20–40 moderate, 40–80 hard, >80 serious mountain. At 43.1 m/km the Tea-Picker 12K sits right on the "hard" boundary, which means that even at only 12 km there is almost no genuinely flat ground on which to recover. Converting with Naismith's rule: EP (equivalent flat distance) = 12.23 km + 527 m ÷ 100 ≈ 17.5 km. EPH = EP ÷ finish time (h), i.e. your equivalent flat-ground speed in the mountains. Estimated finish times:

2. Runnability Breakdown
Taking every 100 m as one segment and grading by absolute gradient into four bands: fully runnable (<5%), run-hike mix (5–10%), technical (10–20%) and boss climbs (≥20%). Every trail runner does this calculation in their head anyway, we are just drawing it out:
Key observation
The −5% to +5% band, the only stretch where you can truly hold a rhythm, accounts for about 2,805 m, under 23% of the course. Try to race this on road-running cadence and the mid-section climbs will break you.
The course contains no segment matching the "false flat" definition (300 m or more of continuous 1–4% gradient). In other words, the gentle grades give you no chance to coast: it either makes you run or makes you hike, with no grey zone in between.
3. Elevation Profile and Fatigue-Weighted Segments
Splitting the 12 km into six blocks and applying a fatigue-weighting coefficient: the start is defined as 1.00, and identical climbing later in the race
"feels heavier" because of accumulated muscle fatigue. The coefficient used is 1 + 0.03 × segment start distance (km).

Within the single kilometre from 6.9 to 7.9 km the gradient standard deviation reaches ±10.5°, the most violently changing stretch on the course. Stone steps alternate with steep pulls, and it sits close to the overall high point (589 m), making it the photographers' favourite ambush spot and the easiest place to blow your pacing. Runners arriving after 09:30 face one more thing: sunlight from the south-east punches through gaps in the ridge, whiting out your vision for half a second, so watch your footing on the steps. The recommendation here is power-hike the whole thing with hands pushing on the knees, keeping heart-rate headroom for the fast descent from 8 to 10 km.
4. Gradient Volatility: Reading Technical Difficulty
The same 10% gradient lets you hold a steady breathing rhythm on a farm road, but forces constant gear changes on stone steps and tangled roots. Computing the standard deviation of gradient across the course quantifies that surface stability:
A gradient standard deviation above 11° is the signature of classic mixed terrain: raw forest track plus stone steps. By comparison, a long climb on a farm road typically shows only 2–4°. Training implications:
- Terrain simulation: Lengshuikeng to Mt. Qixing on Yangmingshan, Jiantanshan to Dalunwei, and the Datongshan trail network all offer comparable gradient volatility.
- Key session: do not train only steady-gradient hill intervals; add "broken rhythm" work alternating 30 s of running with 30 s of power-hiking.
- Priority: eccentric quadriceps and gluteus medius work for the descents matters more here than uphill aerobic capacity.
5. Race-Day Weather
On race day, 19 April 2026, the Pinglin tea country (lat 24.936, lon 121.712) sat under low cloud with near-saturated humidity from the small hours through dawn. There was scattered drizzle early on (0.7 mm total for the day, effectively no rain), the cloud began to break after 08:00 and it was close to clear by noon. This is one of the most comfortable running days of the entire year in the Taipei hills: 20–21°C at the start, 22–23°C on the ridge, and only reaching 27°C around the cut-off.
Tactical weather read
Comfortable conditions, but not zero risk. 100% humidity means the early forest track and stone steps will be slick, with a thin film of water on the rocks. If your trail shoes have rounded lugs, deliberately back off the pace on the descents.
The other trap: high humidity cuts sweat evaporation efficiency. Even at an apparent temperature of only 25°C, core temperature keeps climbing steadily once you hit the 6–8 km ridge section. Drink before the main 5 km climb rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. In the final hour before the cut-off the apparent temperature spikes to 30°C, exactly when cramping is most likely, so back-of-the-pack runners should take in salt.
Compared with the Taojin Trail race (28 Sep 2025, apparent temperature 33–39°C), heat stress here is roughly a third as severe. Expect a very low DNF rate: this is "race the clock and forget about heat exhaustion" weather.

6. Sun Exposure and Environmental Modelling
On a late-April morning in Pinglin the tea fields still carry a thin mist, the air smells of wet grass and soil, and it feels about 3°C cooler than your phone's weather app claims. Once you reach the ridge, all of that is yesterday's news. The Tea-Picker 12K starts at 08:00 with a 5-hour limit and a 13:00 cut-off. The start sits in Pinglin (roughly N24.936°, E121.712°), and across finishing levels runners pass the ridge section (6–8 km) somewhere between 09:30 and 10:30. That window corresponds to late-April solar azimuths of 103°→118° (south-east) at elevations of 44°–55°, stronger ridge-top sun than races with earlier starts. Exposure on either side of the ridge breaks down as follows:

Headlamp note: the cut-off is 13:00 (08:00 start plus a 5-hour limit), making this a pure daytime race. Even a last-second finisher never enters darkness, so no headlamp is required.
7. Safety and Bail-Out Routes
Colours on the map below show the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest drivable road (including farm roads and forestry roads, sourced from OpenStreetMap). Redder means harder to self-extract. The checkpoints themselves all sit at drivable tea-farm road junctions, so they normally fall in the green band.
The psychology of bailing out
The Tea-Picker 12K course has no genuinely stranded section. The furthest point on the entire track is only 339 m from the nearest farm road, the average is just 60 m, and most of the time you are weaving through Pinglin's network of farm roads, forestry tracks and temple access roads. If you get chilled or badly cramped on the 6–8 km ridge section, the nearest exit is back east to the farm road around 5 km, not forward in search of the next official aid station.
For first-time trail runners: the psychological safety margin here is very high. Mobile coverage on the ridge is generally usable (Chunghwa and FarEasTone both cover the Pinglin hills well), so you can reach family or the organisers.
8. Race Tactics and Gear
The one-line race plan
"Breathe deep for the first 5 km, grind through the middle 3, descend steadily for the last 4, and do not over-commit at 10 km." The race is decided on the 386 m climb from 5 to 7.5 km and the −20% plunge at 10.6 km: the energy you saved uphill must be released precisely on that descent, but do not start sprinting until you are off the steep section (11 km) at the earliest, or you will cramp with a kilometre to go.
Shoes
Go for moderate cushioning with medium-depth lugs (4–5 mm). Forest track makes up a large share of the course, so pure road shoes with shallow tread lack grip on the stone steps, while aggressive full-lug trail shoes are wasted on the farm roads. Reference models: Nike Pegasus Trail, Salomon Sense Ride, Hoka Speedgoat Mid.
Hydration
500–750 ml is plenty. April temperatures are cool and aid stations are densely spaced, so two soft flasks or a single 500 ml bottle will do. The organisers run hot food off a griddle and a shaved-ice machine, which keeps your drinking-water needs to a minimum.
Sun protection
The ridge section from 6 to 8 km is the main exposed window (roughly 09:30–10:30, sun elevation 44–55°). Pick two of: SPF 30+ sunscreen, a peaked cap, lightweight UV arm sleeves. Runners cruising to a 3 h+ finish will cover the 8–12 km descent between 11:00 and 13:00, close to midday sun (elevation 65–72°), so sun protection is not optional.
Fuelling
For a 2–3 hour finish on the 12K, one or two gels is enough. There is no gel sponsor on site, so bring your own; take one before the steep climb at 5 km and another before the descent at 9 km.
Supports and braces
Descent impact is significant (a continuous −10% to −20% from 8 to 11 km), so anyone with a history of knee injury should wear a knee sleeve, or add eccentric quadriceps work in the week before the race.
Leave at home
Headlamp, insulation layer, survival blanket: this is a short daytime race with no high-altitude exposure, and the less you carry the faster you run.
9. Personal Take
The aid stations on this course are a benchmark for Taiwanese trail racing: freshly griddled hot food, a shaved-ice machine, the lot. The first thing that hits you running into the main aid station is fried shallot and ginger; your legs are still shaking but your mouth is already moving. It feels like running into a night market, except everyone in this market has trembling legs. The one shame is that there is no gel sponsor, so gel-dependent runners should pack their own. The 12K course is approachable and the cut-off is generous, making it a great place to build nerve on your first trail race.
