Legend says there is gold in the Diaoshan hills. Run this course and you will understand the joke: the organisers buried the gold at 642 m, and you have to climb up there twice before you can confirm it is not there. More seriously: we took all 856 track points from the 2025 Taojin Trail GT 20K, matched them to the ASTER GDEM 30 m elevation model, and computed distance, gradient, runnability and a fatigue coefficient segment by segment, then overlaid Open-Meteo's actual weather for 28 Sep 2025. The conclusion up front: this is a "double-wave climb with a valley-floor flush in the middle" route along the Diaoshan historic trail, with 1,387 m of total climbing and a D+/km of 70.2 m. Add a 33°C heat index at the 07:30 start and this is not a race you can grind out on willpower alone.
Course Dashboard
1. Runnability Breakdown
We split the course into 100 m segments and sorted them by absolute gradient into four tiers: fully runnable (<5%), run-hike mix (5–10%), technical (10–20%) and boss climbs (≥20%). Every trail runner makes this call instinctively, so here it is in numbers:
Key observations
Terrain between −5% and +5%, the only ground where you can hold a steady pace, adds up to just 6,604 m, or 33.4% of the course. That sounds generous next to the Zhaocha 12K (23%), but in absolute terms it is only 6.6 km, which means the remaining 13 km is a constant fight against gradient.
Boss climbs (≥20%) make up 30.7%, so roughly one kilometre in every three is genuine hands-on-knees terrain. On the second wave of the double-climb structure (12–20 km), with fatigue already in the legs, the same gradient feels about 20% harder than it did in the first half.
2. Elevation Profile and Checkpoint Effort Coefficients
We split the 20 km into five major blocks and applied a fatigue weighting coefficient
(1 + 0.03 × segment start km). The same amount of climbing later in the race simply feels heavier
once fatigue has built up in the muscles.

This course has two major ascents, unlike a typical single-summit trail race where you climb once and come back down: the first wave climbs +522 m between 3 and 7 km, then drops from the summit all the way to the valley floor (53 m), and the second wave climbs another +423 m between 11 and 15 km. The mid-course low point, the Xiaocukeng historic trail head at 13.4 km, is CP2, and it is exactly where runners misjudge how much they have left: only 6.35 km remain from CP2, but 400 m of climbing is still waiting for you.
Using Naismith's rule: EP (equivalent flat distance) = 19.75 km + 1,387 m ÷ 100 ≈ 33.6 km. EPH = EP ÷ finish time (h), which represents your equivalent flat-ground speed in the mountains. Projected CP2 arrival times (13.4 km, ~87 m) by finishing standard are as follows:

EPH = EP (equivalent flat distance, 33.6 km) ÷ finish time (h); EP = actual distance 19.75 km + D+ 1,387 m ÷ 100. CP2 times are estimated from overall pace ratios and will vary considerably with individual climbing ability.
3. Gradient Variability: Technical Difficulty
Beyond average gradient, the standard deviation of gradient tells you how broken the terrain is. A high standard deviation means dense stone steps, sharp drops and tight switchbacks, where every foot placement has to be judged afresh.
The area around the Diaoshan historic trail head (7–9 km) is where the technical difficulty of this course is most concentrated: steep stone staircases, narrow ridgeline and alternating exposed roots and mud. By this point most runners have already banked over 500 m of climbing, the muscles are starting to tremble with fatigue, and the rate of foot-placement errors rises measurably.
This 1.6 km stretch covers the Diaoshan summit ridge and the descent onto the historic trail, dropping from 621 m to 556 m (CP1) before a brief rise again. The surface mixes loose gravel, mossy stone slabs and tree roots, and is especially dangerous after rain. There was no rainfall on 28 Sep 2025 (dry conditions), but the summit still carried morning dew, so drop to about 70% pace and keep your eyes on every landing.
4. Actual Race-Day Weather
Hourly weather for the Shuangxi–Diaoshan area (lat 25.108, lon 121.815) on 28 Sep 2025. In late September the northern Taiwan mountains have not yet entered the northeast monsoon, and daytime temperatures are still close to summer levels.
Heat stress analysis
At the 07:30 gun the air temperature was 27.4°C with a heat index of 33°C, and by 11:00 the heat index had reached 39°C. On the WHO heat stress scale that falls into the "Very High" risk band. Even without direct sun, metabolic heat from running alone could push a mid-pack runner's core temperature above 38.5°C between 11:00 and 13:00.
Compared with the Zhaocha Trail race (19 Apr 2026, heat index 23–27°C), the heat load here is roughly 1.5 to 2 times higher. More than 80% of DNF cases occur in races where the heat index exceeds 35°C, and this race sat inside that range for its entire window.

5. Sun Angle and Exposure Analysis
Sunrise on 28 September was around 05:53. At the 07:30 start the sun had climbed to roughly 15° elevation, shining into the forest road from an azimuth of 87° (east-northeast). Early-morning light comes in at a low angle, so every gap in the canopy is a blast of glare. By the time you reach the ridge (expected 09:00–10:30) the sun has swung to east-southeast at 43–54° elevation, the most exposed window of the whole race.

Headlamp note: the cut-off is 13:30 (07:30 start plus 6 hours), so this is a pure daylight race and no headlamp is required. If something unusual delays you past 13:30, tell the organisers and stay put until staff reach you.
6. Safety and Bail-Out Options
The colours on the map below show the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest drivable road, including forestry and industrial roads, using OpenStreetMap data. The redder the segment, the harder it is to get yourself out. Checkpoints are all sited at drivable trail heads, so they usually fall in green.
Bail-out options on this route are relatively limited, because the course runs deep into the hills across several stretches of historic trail. Confirm the following before you start:
- CP1 Diaoshan historic trail head (8.51 km, 556 m): heading east you can exit toward Provincial Route 102 and Jiufen. Staff are posted here, making it the best place on the mountain to call for help.
- CP2 Xiaocukeng historic trail head (13.39 km, 87 m): close to flat ground, with a southward exit onto an industrial road back to Shuangxi. If you feel heat exhaustion coming on, this is the easiest place to get picked up.
- The long climb from 4 to 7 km: there is no lateral exit, so once you are on it you either go up or retrace your steps. If serious symptoms appear here, descending immediately is safer than pushing on to the top.
Spotting heat exhaustion early
In a race with a 35–39°C heat index, headache, unsteady footing and stopping sweating are the classic early triad of heat exhaustion. Any one of them means stop running, sit down in the shade, drink plenty of fluid and alert the nearest staff member.
Mobile coverage on the Diaoshan ridge is generally good (FarEasTone and Chunghwa Telecom). Saving the organisers' emergency number in your phone before heading into the hills matters more than any piece of gear.
7. Tactical Summary and Gear Recommendations
The one-line race plan
"Stroll the first 3 km, grit your teeth from 3 to 7 km, do not celebrate between CP1 and CP2, hold on for one more wave after CP2, and save your knees on the way down." There are two decisive points: the 522 m sustained climb from 3 to 7 km, which burns more than 30% of your total energy, and the second wave of 423 m between 11 and 15 km, by which time the temperature has reached 33–39°C and heat piles on top of fatigue. CP2 sits between them and looks like salvation, but there are still 6.35 km and 133 m of climbing from CP2 to the finish. Do not spend more than 5 minutes at CP2, because standing still in the heat makes cramping far more likely.
Hydration strategy (the big one)
Carry at least 1.5 L in soft flasks, plus whatever you can refill at checkpoints. Drink 500 ml in the 30 minutes before the start, then take on fluid every 20–25 minutes rather than waiting for thirst. In a race this hot, electrolyte tablets are mandatory, not optional.
Shoes
The Diaoshan historic trail is full of stone slabs and tree roots, so aim for moderate cushioning with medium-depth lugs (4–5 mm). If you prefer grip on slab, the rubber compounds on the Salomon Speedcross or Hoka Speedgoat perform well on damp stone. Pure road shoes do not have anywhere near enough grip on the stone staircases, so do not try it.
Sun protection and cooling
The heat index on the ridge reaches 36–39°C. The benefit of the three-piece combination of sunscreen (SPF50+), a lightweight trail cap with a low brim, and cooling arm sleeves is well supported by research. A wet wipe or small towel soaked at a checkpoint and pressed to the back of the neck can bring core temperature down by 1–2°C.
Fuelling
For a race with 1,387 m of climbing, take one energy gel or its solid-food equivalent every 45–60 minutes. Checkpoint supplies are unpredictable, so carrying 3–4 gels and a pack of salt tablets of your own is the safer bet. In the heat, blood flow to the gut drops and hard-to-digest solid food easily triggers nausea late in the race.
First aid and mandatory kit
Trail challenge categories typically require: an emergency blanket, whistle, mobile phone and reserve food. Check the official entry list. Personally I would also pack a small kit with povidone-iodine wipes and an elastic bandage for cleaning up after a fall on the stone steps.
Knee and ankle support
The long descent from 15 to 19.75 km (−513 m over 4.75 km), combined with fatigue from the heat, is a high-risk stretch for the anterolateral knee ligaments and for rolling an ankle. Anyone with a history of injury should wear compression knee or ankle sleeves.
8. Personal Take (Short Review)
Taojin, "panning for gold", is a well-chosen name: you really will pan a lot of things out of these hills, including lactate in your quads, cramp in your calves, and a certain philosophical enquiry into why you signed up in the first place. The view from the Diaoshan summit is genuinely beautiful, provided you still have the energy to lift your head.
The serious verdict: the double-wave climb plus September heat makes this race far harder than the raw numbers suggest. D+1,387 m is a challenge but a manageable one in cool conditions; add a 33–39°C heat index and it becomes another order of magnitude. I would recommend this race to runners with solid trail experience (at least three races of 15K or more) whose EPH sits reliably above 6.0 km/h. If this is your first trail race, cut your teeth on the Zhaocha Trail 12K or something similarly gentle first.
