Formosa Trail 40K is a mid-distance trail race held in late November in Puli, Nantou. This piece breaks it down using the GPX track from my own run last year (2025/11/29), ASTER 30 m terrain data and ERA5 historical weather for race day, and lays out the tactical changes I plan to make in 2026, one by one. 38.6 km, +2,019 m of climbing, a 1,658 m high point and a vertical ratio of 52.3 m/km. On paper that looks gentler than Far Away 40K, but the structure is a 6 km main climb gaining 1,148 m followed by rolling ridgeline and a long descent. Add 50% of the route sitting 500 m or more from the nearest road, late-November daylight that ends at 17:09, and a 13-hour cutoff (05:30–18:30), and it is still a race you have to plan seriously.
1. Course dashboard
A vertical ratio of 52.3 m/km lands in the tough band by trail-running convention (40–80 tough, 80+ true mountain race). It is easier than Far Away 40K (64.4) and much harder than a typical road-surface 40K (25–35). Converted with Naismith's rule, EP (flat-equivalent distance) = 38.6 km + 2,019 m ÷ 100 ≈ 58.8 km. EPH = EP ÷ finish time (h), which represents your equivalent flat-ground speed in the mountains. Estimated finish times:

2. Runnability breakdown
Splitting the course into 100 m segments and sorting them into four bands by absolute gradient, Formosa Trail 40K comes out as a ridgeline-type route: runnable and technical terrain each take roughly a third, and the brutal steep stuff is only 11.7%. In other words, you can run far more of this course than you can of Far Away 40K, provided you survive the main climb between 3 and 10 km.
Key observation: the "false flat" is in the first 3 km
The gradient histogram shows that the ±5% "steady pacing" band adds up to roughly 27% of the course, more than Far Away 40K's 20%. But almost all of that runnable terrain sits in the first 3 km (the farm roads around Puli) and in the 33–37 km descent into the finish.
The opening 3 km contain three consecutive false-flat stretches (0–0.45 km, 0.92–1.59 km, 1.82–2.89 km), and this is exactly where 95% of runners blow up their start. The next 6 km climb 1,148 m, and every bit of energy you waste early gets collected back after km 6.
3. Elevation profile and segment effort factors
Cutting the 38.6 km into five segments and applying a fatigue weighting factor of 1 + 0.02 × segment start distance (km) shows why identical climbing feels so much heavier late in the race:

20.8–21.8 km (gradient standard deviation ±17.6 degrees). This kilometre runs between a minor high point on the main ridge and a deep gully, alternating sharp climbs and drops, and it is the single most likely place on the 40K to cramp or roll an ankle. Treat it as a slow-down zone: plant your poles, protect the knees, forget about pace.
4. Gradient variability as a technical difficulty index
An overall gradient standard deviation of ±13.7 degrees is gentler than Far Away 40K (±18.7) and far harsher than a typical forest-road course (2–4 degrees). It is the classic signature of a ridgeline mountain trail: continuous moderate gradients rather than cliff-like walls. Training suggestions:
- Terrain simulation: the Yangmingshan traverse (Qixing, Datun, Shamao), Beichatianshan and Jiali Mountain all have a similar gradient structure.
- Climbing muscular endurance: 6 km and 1,148 m is the hardest test on this course, and the goal is "being able to power-hike for 60–90 minutes". Two 60-minute stair sessions per week is the most efficient approach.
- Downhill training: the continuous 11 km descent from 26 to 37 km (−1,148 m) hammers the quads. For eccentric loading, find a 15–25% forest road and repeat 5 × 10 minutes of descending.
- Ridge tempo work: from 10 to 26 km the course rolls between 1,400 and 1,650 m, so you need to recover quickly at 1,500 m of altitude. Lactate-tolerance work (tempo pace plus short intervals) is the key session.
5. Race-day weather
On race day, 2025/11/29, the mountains east of Puli (lat 23.95, lon 121.03, elevation range 510–1,658 m) delivered a textbook early-winter dry-and-cold clear day: a light jacket was enough for the pre-dawn start at the 510 m Puli basin, temperatures dropped sharply on the 1,658 m summit, midday ridge exposure had everyone stripping to short sleeves, and it turned cold again for the late finishers. Zero rain all day, wind 1.8–4.7 km/h and cloud cover 0–46%, which is about as close as Taiwan gets to perfect mountain-running weather.
Reading the weather tactically
A mild start: at 05:30 the Puli start line (around 510 m) measured 12.4°C with an apparent temperature of 10.7°C, which is comfortable for a Central Mountain Range trailhead. Long sleeves, a light jacket and gloves are enough, and once you warm up you can shed the jacket into your pack somewhere around km 3–4.
The real cold is on the high ridge: after climbing to the 1,658 m summit (km 9.9), the standard lapse rate (6.5°C per km) puts the temperature at 5–6°C, and ridge wind chill can push the felt temperature close to 0°C. Always carry an ultralight insulation layer, because the rolling ridge between km 9 and 22 sits at 1,400–1,650 m and is where hypothermia risk lives.
Heat stress climbs fast after 09:00 (lower sections): humidity drops from 66% to 31%, the sun hits the ridge fully, and in the valleys and descents (km 22–32, between 700 and 1,200 m) the apparent temperature swings from 12°C to 23°C. This is where you pack the insulation away and switch to hydration and sodium: 150 ml every 30 minutes and one salt tablet per hour.
Rapid cooling after 15:00: temperatures fall quickly once the sun drops, sliding from 18°C to 13°C between 17:00 and 18:00. If you are still on the mountain past 17:30, put the insulation layer on immediately, because cold plus fatigue plus low blood sugar is the classic hypothermia recipe.

6. Daylight and sun exposure
On 2025/11/29 Puli saw sunrise at 06:21 and sunset at 17:09, meaning only 10 hours 48 minutes of daylight, one of the shortest windows of the year. The race starts at 05:30, so the first 51 minutes are a climb in the dark, and if you are not back before 17:09 you will be descending the final 1–2 hours by headlamp.

7. Safety and bail-out options
Colours on the map below represent the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest drivable road (including farm roads and forest roads, sourced from OpenStreetMap): redder means harder to self-evacuate. Checkpoints themselves sit at drivable forest-road or access-road junctions, so they normally fall in green sections.
Roughly 50% of Formosa Trail 40K sits more than 500 m from the nearest road, with a maximum of 2,498 m in the gully descent around km 18.9. Compared with Far Away 40K (30% remote), this course pushes much deeper into the mountains. The remote stretches cluster at km 4–11 (main climb plus first ridge) and km 15–22 (mid ridge and deep gullies). Mobile signal can be unreliable in those sections and self-evacuation is expensive. Before the start: tell family your estimated finish time, save the race emergency number in your phone, and carry an emergency insulation layer (survival blanket).
8. Tactical summary and gear
The race plan in one sentence
"Do not charge the false flat in the first 3 km, hike the 6 km main climb, keep the ridge under LT heart rate, protect the knees on the long descent after 26 km, and have insulation ready for the evening." This course is not decided by elite speed, it is decided by whether ordinary runners can hold a heart-rate ceiling on the main climb and keep eccentric quad endurance for the descent.
Shoes
Go with a moderate-lug trail shoe (4–5 mm lugs) with medium cushioning. The ridge is mostly dirt, roots and loose rock, with none of the rope terrain Far Away has, so technical demands are slightly lower. But the 11 km descent needs cushioning to protect the quads. Reference models: Hoka Speedgoat, Salomon Sense Ride, Nike Pegasus Trail.
Hydration and fuel
Carry 1.5 L of fluid and 3–4 gels. The dry, cold November air (31–66% humidity) makes it feel like you are sweating little, but altitude and wind actually speed evaporation up, so dehydration sneaks up on you. Fill up completely at every checkpoint and take in at least 100 kcal of solid food.
Headlamp
Mandatory. The first 51 minutes are a climb in the dark, and slower runners may descend the final section after sunset (17:09). Main beam ≥ 200 lumens, one spare battery, and at least 4 hours of continuous burn time.
Warmth and wind protection
Start in long sleeves, a windshell, light gloves and a buff. The Puli start line sits at 510 m and feels like 10.7°C at 05:30, but the 1,658 m summit drops to 5–6°C and ridge wind chill can approach 0°C. Always keep an ultralight insulation layer in the pack (something like a Patagonia Nano-Air or UNIQLO Ultra Light Down), since hypothermia risk rises after 17:00.
Poles
Strongly recommended. Poles save 15–25% of leg work on the 6 km, 1,148 m main climb, and take 20–30% of the eccentric quad load off the 11 km descent. Carbon Z-folding models (Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ or Leki Cross Trail) suit this course best.
Mandatory safety kit
Survival blanket, whistle, first-aid kit, phone (≥ 70% charge or a power bank), and a race ID band with emergency contacts filled in. Signal is patchy through the ridge and gully section (km 15–22), so if you get hurt you may have to rely on other runners to relay word to a checkpoint.
9. My personal tactical notes for 2026
The biggest lesson from the 2025 edition was those first 3 km of false flat. At the time I figured it was still dark and everyone would be walking anyway, then ended up jogging along with the group ahead at 6:30/km. By the time the main climb began at km 5, my heart rate was pinned at 165 and would not come down, and I spent the whole first half paying that back. After summiting at km 9 my body was essentially spent, and the remaining 30 km were pure survival.
What changes for 2026:
- Run or power-hike the first 3 km at 7:30/km and keep heart rate under 140. Let people pass; the main climb is where the race actually starts.
- Hike the entire main climb (km 3–10) at a target heart rate of 150–160. Poles out, rhythm even, target 90 minutes to the summit (arriving at 06:30 into the climb).
- Switch the ridge (km 10–26) to "hike 1, run 2": hike the ups, run the flats and easy descents. Keep heart rate below LT (roughly 160–165) and do not fall for the "if it is runnable, run it" impulse.
- The long descent after 26 km (−1,148 m): poles down, shorten the stride, deliberately hold back at 5:30–6:30/km. Better to lose five minutes than to blow the quads.
- Fuelling rhythm: 150 ml of fluid every 30 minutes, one salt tablet per hour, 100 kcal per hour whether or not I feel hungry. Full resupply at every checkpoint.
- Gear changes: last year's lugs were too shallow and the descents felt slippery, so for 2026 I am switching to Speedgoat 6 (5 mm lugs). I am also adding a spare headlamp battery to the pack, having nearly run out before the finish last year.
2026 target finish time
Goal: a 9:30 finish (EPH 6.2 km/h, flat-equivalent 9:45/km), about an hour faster than 2025 and at the back end of the "advanced" band.
Split targets: CP1 (km 10, the summit) at 07:30, CP2 (km 20, mid ridge) at 10:00, CP3 (km 27, start of the descent) at 12:00, finish (km 38.6) at 15:00.
The bottom line: stay within ±15 minutes of every checkpoint split. If I am already 30 minutes down at CP1, switch immediately to finish-preservation mode with a revised target of under 12:00.
