Formosa Trail 18K is a mid-distance trail race held in Puli in late November. It starts at the same place and on the same day as the 40K, but both the difficulty and the time commitment are far friendlier: 18.27 km, +684 m of climbing, a high point of 818 m and a vertical ratio of 37.4 m/km. The route is a twin-summit shape: 3 km of warm-up inside Puli, then summit one at +250 m, a descent to 510 m in the middle, summit two at +315 m, and a 5 km long downhill back to the finish. 53.9% of the course is runnable and every metre of it sits within 500 m of a road (the furthest point is 426 m), with an 08:00 start and an 8-hour cut-off (16:00). That makes it close to the ideal first trail race. This piece uses the 2025/11/29 GPX track to break down the terrain and the race-day weather, and closes with a complete plan for runners targeting a finish around the 7-hour mark.
1. Course dashboard
A vertical ratio of 37.4 m/km sits in the gentle to ordinary mountain trail band that trail runners use (25–40 ordinary, 40–80 hard). It is gentler than Formosa 40K (52.3), and the whole difference is that the 18K skips the big sustained climb up the main ridge. Using Naismith's rule, EP (flat-equivalent distance) = 18.27 km + 684 m ÷ 100 ≈ 25.1 km. EPH = EP ÷ finish time in hours. Projected finish times:

2. Runnability breakdown
Splitting the course into 100 m segments and grading each by absolute gradient gives four bands. Formosa Trail 18K is more than half runnable (53.9%), 21.6% technical, and only 10.7% boss-grade steepness. In other words, clear two short climbs and you can run or jog most of the rest.
Key observation: the first kilometre of false flat
The gradient histogram shows that the ±5% "steady pacing band" accounts for over 43% of the course, 1.6 times the share in Formosa 40K (27%). This route really is far more runnable.
The false flat straight after the start, 0–0.9 km on Puli's service roads, is where beginners most often blow up their pacing. The next 4 km climb 250 m, drop to the valley floor, then climb another 315 m. Charging the opening kilometre wrecks both summits.
3. Elevation profile and perceived-effort splits
Splitting the 18.27 km into five sections and applying a fatigue weighting of 1 + 0.02 × section start distance (km) shows why identical climbing feels heavier late in the race:

11.5–12.5 km (gradient standard deviation ±21.7 degrees). This kilometre sits either side of summit two: a sharp +120 m push to the top followed by a steep −105 m drop. It is the single most likely place on the 18K to cramp or roll an ankle. Treat it as a section to slow down, plant the poles and forget about pace.
4. Gradient variability as a technical difficulty read
An overall gradient standard deviation of ±11.6 degrees is gentler than Formosa 40K (±13.7) and far gentler than Far Away 40K (±18.7), which puts it squarely in mellow mountain trail territory. There is no rope-assisted scrambling and no cliff-like hauling, but the two short climbs still demand muscular endurance. Training suggestions:
- Terrain simulation: Elephant Mountain's Six Giant Rocks, Huangdidian and the Datun Mountain traverse all share a similar gradient structure with single climbs of +200–300 m.
- Back-to-back climbing endurance: two short summits arrive in sequence, so the goal is being able to push uphill on foot continuously for 30–40 minutes. Two 40-minute stair sessions a week is enough.
- Downhill endurance: the continuous 5.6 km descent from 12.5–18 km (−300 m) still loads the quads. Find a forest road at 10–20% gradient and run 5 × 8 minutes of descending.
- "Able to walk for 4 hours" is the floor: at a 7-hour target you are effectively on the mountain for seven hours. One 90–120 minute moderate-intensity hill hike per week helps most.
5. Race-day weather
On race day, 2025/11/29, the mountains east of Puli (lat 23.95, lon 121.03, elevation range 502–818 m) delivered a classic early-winter dry mountain bluebird day: sunshine from the gun, hot exposed ridges at midday, then a gentle cool-down through a mild afternoon. Zero rainfall all day, wind of 1.8–4.7 km/h and cloud cover of 0–46% made it close to the best trail weather of the year.
Reading the weather tactically
A comfortable start: at 08:00 the Puli start line (around 510 m) measured 13.5°C with an apparent temperature of 13.7°C, which is about the ideal trail-race start temperature. The two summits at 700–818 m are only slightly cooler (roughly 1–2°C of lapse), so nothing on the course gets cold. Long sleeves plus thin gloves are enough; strip them into the pack once you warm up on summit one.
Heat stress rises fast after 10:00: humidity falls from 60% to 31%, the sun hits the ridges fully, and apparent temperature climbs from 14°C to 22°C. Drink and take sodium proactively on the exposed ridge sections: after summit one (past 10:00), 150 ml every 30 minutes and one salt tablet per hour.
A stable afternoon: from 14:00 to 16:00 the temperature holds at 19–22°C with 35–41% humidity, the most pleasant window of the day. Hypothermia is not a concern, but watch the load on quads and knees during the long descent.

6. Daylight and sun exposure
On 2025/11/29 Puli saw sunrise at 06:21 and sunset at 17:09. With an 08:00 start and a 16:00 cut-off, the entire race runs in daylight, which is the biggest advantage of an entry-level trail race: no headlamp required and no visibility problems at all.

7. Safety and bail-out options
The colours on the map below show the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest drivable road (including service roads and forest roads, sourced from OpenStreetMap). Redder means harder to self-extract.
✓ Safety profile: never more than 500 m from a road
No part of Formosa Trail 18K sits more than 500 m from the nearest road, with the furthest point only 426 m out (around summit two). 64% of the course is within 100 m of a road, 24% is 100–300 m and 12% is 300–500 m.
For beginners that is a decisive safety advantage: self-extraction after an injury or a bad cramp is straightforward, phone signal is reliable, and checkpoint staff or vehicles can reach you quickly. It makes the race an ideal first attempt at trail racing.
8. Tactical summary and gear
The strategy in one line
"Jog the first kilometre of false flat, hike both summits, jog the ridges, let the descents run but protect the knees, and fuel properly at every checkpoint." This course is not won on pace; it is won on whether you can hold your heart rate through two short climbs and keep muscular endurance for the long descent. Keep the climbs out of the red and the downhill is where you collect.
Shoes
Go for a moderate lug trail shoe (4 mm lugs) with medium cushioning. The surface is mostly dirt, roots and service road with no rope sections. You can finish in road shoes, but they will slip a little on the descents. Beginner picks: Hoka Speedgoat, Salomon Sense Ride, Brooks Cascadia.
Hydration and fuel
Carry 1 L of water plus 2–3 gels in the pack. In dry November weather, 150 ml every 30 minutes is enough. Top up at every checkpoint and eat some solid food (banana, rice ball). Beginners most often forget sodium, so bring two salt tablets.
Headlamp
Not needed. With an 08:00 start and a 16:00 cut-off the whole race is in daylight; a normal finish (≤ 7h) is nowhere near sunset (17:09). If you are worried about running long, a 100-lumen backup lamp is cheap insurance.
Warmth and wind protection
Start in long sleeves plus thin gloves (around 13°C at 08:00; the summits top out at 818 m, so the difference is small and never truly cold). You will heat up on summit one, so pick sleeves you can push up, or arm-sleeve style layers. A 100 g wind shell in the pack covers any change in conditions.
Poles
Recommended. Poles save roughly 15% of leg effort on the two short climbs, and the knee protection on the long descent is even more noticeable. Carbon Z-folding models (Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ, or the budget Decathlon FH500) both work. If it is your first race with poles, practise deploying and stowing them once or twice beforehand.
Mandatory kit
Phone (≥ 70% battery), first-aid kit, race ID band with emergency contact, sunscreen, sunglasses and whatever the race lists as compulsory. Because signal is reliable and the roads are close, this course does not call for heavy items like a survival blanket or whistle.
9. The 7-hour finish plan (for 2026 entrants)
This section is written for first-time trail racers with normal fitness aiming to finish in about seven hours. Seven hours sounds generous, but you still have to keep a rhythm. The 8-hour cut-off is only one hour beyond it, and while that looks like plenty of buffer, the classic beginner failure is going out too hard, spiking the heart rate and grinding to a halt late in the race.
Core principles for a 7-hour finish
1. Treat the first 1 km of false flat as a warm-up hike. Do not chase the lead pack. Hold 12 min/km (brisk walking pace) and keep the heart rate under 120.
2. Hike every climb, jog the flats, let the descents run. Never run the climbs: running versus hiking costs a lot of heart rate for very little time, and running uphill only brings the blow-up forward.
3. Fuel fully at every checkpoint. Do not rush out; sit for 3–5 minutes to drink and eat. The heart rate settles and you will actually run faster later.
4. Stay within ±15 minutes of the checkpoint schedule. Glance at your watch at each checkpoint and adjust whether you are ahead or behind.

* The "total 5:30" above is pure moving time. Checkpoint stops, toilet breaks and gear adjustments realistically add about 60 minutes (4 checkpoints × 15 minutes) plus a 30-minute buffer. Finishing inside seven hours is a reasonable goal.
🎒 Race-week checklist
- 7 days out: start the taper with 30 minutes of easy running or walking per day. Confirm all your gear is ready.
- 3 days out: carb-loading window. Eat more pasta, rice and potatoes, and less high-fibre food or beans (to avoid gut trouble on race day).
- 1 day out: get to Puli early, check in and walk the start line. Eat before 19:00 and be asleep by 22:00. Check your laces and tape any known hot spots.
- Race day 06:30: wake up, drink 500 ml of water and eat 300–400 kcal of rice balls or bread. Arrive at the start by 07:30 and use the toilet.
- 10 minutes to the gun: take off the jacket (you will heat up on the climb) and start warming up (high knees, jumping jacks).
🚨 Handling problems during the race
- Cramp: stop immediately, take a salt tablet with water and stretch lightly. Once it eases, continue at a lower intensity and do not try to run through it.
- Blisters: tape the friction point at a checkpoint with breathable tape or a plaster. Do not lance the blister.
- Dizziness or nausea: likely dehydration or low blood sugar. Stop and rest, take 200 ml of fluid plus a gel. If there is no improvement in 15 minutes, tell the staff and pull out.
- Severe knee pain: shift weight onto the poles, switch to brisk walking and consider a DNF. Carrying a knee injury through the back half can do permanent damage, and no finish is worth that.
- More than 30 minutes behind the checkpoint schedule: assess withdrawal right away. With an 8-hour cut-off, being more than an hour down puts the finish at real risk.
Seven hours is a friendly target, but 18K in the mountains can still go wrong. If your body feels off, the weather turns, or something simply feels wrong, a DNF is also a win: it gets you home in one piece and leaves you free to come back in 2027. The goal of a first trail race should be to "learn something, finish safely and want to do it again", not to hit any particular time.
