Far Away 40K Course Breakdown:
Elevation Analysis, Pacing and Fuelling Tactics

This is a heavyweight 40K that starts at the Wuwowei Mountain trailhead in Heping District, Taichung, and crosses the Dasyueshan range. 43.39 km, 2,793 m of cumulative climbing, a vertical ratio of 64.4 m/km: that last number already sits on the threshold of "serious mountain" territory. What makes it harder than the numbers suggest is the personality of the course: you climb to the 1,760 m summit of Wuwowei Mountain within the first 6 km, and the steepest 100-metre section hits 67%, terrain where you genuinely need your hands as well as your feet. The 15-hour cut-off (05:00–20:00) looks generous, but most runners will spend 10–13 hours out there before they see the finish.

A vertical ratio of 64.4 m/km puts this course in the "hard / borderline serious mountain" bracket used in trail circles (40–80 is hard, 80+ is serious mountain). The number is lower than the 2025 Taojin Trail 30K (80.6 m/km) in the same season, but the real-world difficulty is no easier: Far Away 40K packs its nastiest 1,028 m of continuous climbing into the first 5.7 km, so there is no warm-up zone after the gun. Using Naismith's rule: EP (equivalent flat distance) = 43.39 km + 2,793 m ÷ 100 ≈ 71.3 km. EPH = EP ÷ finish time (h), i.e. your equivalent flat speed in the mountains. Estimated finish times:

2. Runnability and Tactical Distribution

Slicing the course into 100-metre segments and sorting them into four bands by absolute gradient, Far Away 40K shows a classic "all peaks and troughs" profile: under 26% of the course is properly runnable, while boss-level pitches account for 24.7%. In other words, for every kilometre you cover, 247 metres exceed a 20% gradient, roughly two solid minutes of hands-on-knees pushing.

Key observations

The "steady pacing zone" of ±5% gradient makes up only about 20% of the course. The other 80% of the time you are fighting the terrain: driving your knees uphill, absorbing with your quads downhill.

There are three short but noticeable "false flat" stretches (1.1–1.5 km, 33.8–34.2 km and 36.4–36.8 km). These are the places where it is easy to over-run, especially the latter two, which sit beyond 30 km: spike your heart rate there and it will cost you the closing kilometres.

Splitting the 40 km into six segments and applying a fatigue weighting of 1 + 0.02 × segment start distance (km) shows why identical climbing feels so much heavier late in the race:

Inside this single kilometre you get a −19% plunge followed by a wall-like +67% climb: the spot on the whole 40K where hypothermia, cramping and falls are most likely. When you reach it, grab trees with both hands, keep your knees low and forget about pace. Getting through in one piece beats everything else.

A whole-course gradient standard deviation of ±18.7 degrees is the signature of raw forest road plus rocky ridgeline plus rope sections, clearly above forestry-road-style courses (2–4 degrees) and ordinary mountain trails (8–12 degrees). Training recommendations:

  • Terrain simulation: Wuliaojian, Huangdidian, the Bijiashan traverse and Jianlong Ridge all deliver comparable gradient volatility.
  • Upper-body work: with so much scrambling, pull-ups, planks and farmer's walks are the key sessions.
  • Downhill training: eccentric loading is the priority. Find a 30% forest road and repeat 5×15 minutes of descending so your quads survive the back half.

5. Race-Day Weather

On race day, 2025/03/01, the weather at the Wuwowei Mountain trailhead (lat 24.203, lon 121.006) was classic "dry, cool, high-altitude spring": cold enough at the start to want gloves, yet warm enough on the ridge at midday to strip a layer. Zero rainfall all day, wind of 2–10 km/h and good visibility, close to the best mountain running weather of the year.

Reading the weather tactically

A genuinely cold start: 12.5°C at 05:00, but the ridge sits at 1,760 m, so ground-level temperature is probably another 3–5°C lower and wind chill pushes the felt temperature close to 5°C. Start in long sleeves, a wind shell and gloves, then stow them around CP1 (roughly 08:00–09:00).

Heat stress climbs fast after 09:00: humidity drops from 90% to 60% and the sun hits the ridge directly, pushing apparent temperature from 12°C up to 24°C. Most runners are in the descents and valleys between 12 and 20 km at that point: plan on 50% more fluid and salt than you took in early on.

It cools again before the cut-off: temperatures fall quickly after 17:00, and if you are still on the mountain past 18:00, a dropping core temperature will make your quads ache more. Carrying a light insulating layer is not optional.

6. Daylight and Sun Exposure

On 2025/03/01, sunrise was 06:14 and sunset 17:51. With a 05:00 start, the first 70 minutes are a high-altitude climb in the dark. Every runner needs a headlamp from the gun, and the scrambling terrain in the first 5 km up Wuwowei Mountain is roughly twice as hard in the dark.

7. Safety and Bail-Out Options

The colours on the map below show the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest driveable road (including forestry and industrial roads, data from OpenStreetMap): the redder the segment, the harder it is to self-evacuate. The checkpoints themselves all sit at driveable forestry or access road junctions, so they generally fall in the green zones.

Roughly a third of Far Away 40K sits more than 500 m from the nearest road, with a maximum of 2.1 km, concentrated on the Wuwowei ridgeline (3–7 km), the deep mid-course valley (18–22 km) and the second ridge section (26–32 km). Phone coverage is unreliable in these stretches, no vehicle can reach you and self-evacuation is extremely costly. Before you start: tell your family your expected finish time, save the race emergency number in your phone, and carry an emergency insulating layer (survival blanket).

8. Tactical Summary and Gear Recommendations

The one-line tactic

"Survive Wuwowei, jog and refuel through the mid-course valleys, walk the 27 km boss climb without attacking it, and refuse to be baited by the false flats in the last 10 km." The outcome of this course is not decided by elites racing for speed but by whether ordinary runners can protect their heart rate and quads after Wuwowei Mountain. Push too hard in the first 60 minutes and the whole race is gone.

Shoes

Go for aggressive trail shoes (5 mm+ lugs) with moderate cushioning. The early Wuwowei sections involve ropes, rock cracks and roots, and shallow lugs slip on wet stone. With 2,800 m of climbing and the same again in descent, a stiff, harsh sole will blow your quads out after 30 km. Reference models: Salomon Speedcross, Hoka Speedgoat, La Sportiva Bushido.

Hydration and fuel

Carry 1.5–2 L of fluid plus 3–5 gels. March ridge temperatures run 12–23°C with humidity down to 46%, so you sweat less than in summer but dehydrate just as fast. Fill up completely at every CP and take in at least 100 kcal of solid food there.

Headlamp

Mandatory. The first 70 minutes are a night climb, and slower runners may also finish after sunset. Aim for a main lamp of ≥ 300 lumens plus one spare battery, with at least 6 hours of continuous burn time.

Warmth and wind protection

Start in long sleeves, a windproof jacket, gloves and a buff. Wind chill on the ridge can drop the felt temperature to 5°C. Always keep an ultralight insulating layer in the pack (e.g. Patagonia Nano-Air); it can save you if you get cold late in the day.

Support and protection

Knee taping plus poles are strongly recommended. The Wuwowei descent and the sharp drop at 27 km both hammer the knees, and poles can offload 20–30% of the work from your quads.

Essential safety kit

Survival blanket, whistle, first-aid kit, phone (≥ 70% battery or a power bank), plus a race ID band with your emergency contact filled in. Signal on the ridge is patchy, so if you get hurt you will rely on other runners passing word to a CP.

9. Personal Notes

The Wuwowei opening section really is startling: several pitches in the first 5 km approach 60–67%, and you are not just pulling on ropes but edging your feet into rock cracks, which feels much closer to climbing than running. Over the summit the view opens up all at once, though, and the ridgeline panorama across the Dasyueshan range is worth the entry fee on its own. When the second wall arrives at 27 km with almost nothing left in the tank, that stretch is a test of mindset as much as of gear. Treat it as a "mountain strength session" rather than a trail run, and the right mindset will carry you to the finish.
