Start with the neck. Isometric work is the safest approach: place your palm on the front, back, left and right of your head to give gentle resistance, keep the head still and push against it, holding 5 to 10 seconds each direction. The key is to stay slow, controlled and pain-free, avoiding fast head whips or heavy loading. Next, thoracic mobility. Many people overload the cervical spine simply because the thoracic spine is too stiff, so every degree of rotation lands on the neck. To finish it, the attacker must assemble three conditions: a lockdown on one of your legs, control of your far arm, and a grip on your head. Your defensive priority is to break those three conditions in reverse order, as early as possible, because once all three are in place and the lever is loaded, all that is left is to tap early.

The first priority is hiding your top arm. The Twister needs the attacker to capture your far arm in order to pull your upper body across and create rotation. Keep that arm clamped tight to your chest with the elbow tucked so he never gets the lever to crank your head, and the lock is missing a corner and cannot arrive. Second, fight the lockdown: straighten the trapped leg as much as possible to reduce how effectively he pins your lower body, so your upper and lower halves never become a rigid force couple. Third, once rotational tension has begun, actively turning your head in the same direction as the twist sheds part of the tension, and rolling back towards your shoulders reclaims the room your spine needs to rotate for itself.

But let us be completely honest: all of these escapes assume the lock is not yet tight. Once all three conditions are in place and pressure builds, a spinal lock does not give you the struggle-and-release buffer a choke does. At that point the correct and mature response is to tap early. Gambling your cervical spine on a training submission was never brave, it was just a bad trade. Treating the tap as neutral information rather than a win or a loss is the mindset of people who train for decades.

A single brief episode that resolves completely is usually a transient nerve traction event.
