You are on bottom guard, your opponent reaches an arm inside to break you down, and the instinctive reaction for a lot of practitioners is to protect the neck, without realising the real trap is hidden in that very arm. The Triangle Choke is one of the few submissions that needs no gi grip and no standing up: your legs alone shut down your opponent's carotid arteries. It is also one of the most emblematic weapons in the entire guard system. Its history, however, is a mess, spanning both Kosen Judo in Japan and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with the naming and the question of who brought it over still disputed today. This guide covers the origin controversy, the step-by-step mechanics, the setups, the strengths and limits, the common escapes, and the role the triangle plays in modern competition.

1. Origin and history: a Rashomon spanning Japanese judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The Japanese name for the triangle choke is sankaku-jime, and its earliest technical roots trace back to Kosen Judo in Japan, a branch of judo popular among the country's technical colleges in the early 20th century that focused on ne-waza (ground technique) and emphasised grappling on the mat far more than mainstream Kodokan judo. Development of the technique is generally credited to two Kosen Judo figures, Tsunetane Oda and Yaichibei Kanemitsu, both direct students of judo founder Jigoro Kano. According to Wikipedia, the earliest recorded competitive use of the triangle appears at a Kosen Judo tournament held in Kobe in November 1921, finished successfully by Kanemitsu's student Masaru Hayakawa.

How the triangle actually entered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most contested part of the story. The most widely circulated version has Rolls Gracie "discovering" the technique in an old judo book during the 1970s and systematising it into the BJJ curriculum. Several independent sources question that account: Pedro Valente, a co-founder of the Valente Brothers academy, has said he never saw any member of the Gracie family use the technique before the 1970s. By contrast, the Japanese judoka living in Brazil at the time, including Geo Omori, Takeo Yano and Yasuichi Ono, were reportedly already familiar with it. A 1935 newspaper photograph even shows Yasuichi Ono drilling this leg choke in preparation for a match against Hélio Gracie, nearly 40 years before Rolls Gracie's era.

Origin Rashomon: both versions have evidence, neither has a verdict

Two accounts of the triangle's origin coexist, one claiming a judo lineage and one claiming independent Brazilian development, and each has first-hand evidence behind it. Supporters of the Rolls Gracie version stress his contribution in systematising and teaching the technique; sceptics point out that the competitive record of Japanese-Brazilian judoka predates his era. No single source currently overrides the other, and the more honest statement is this: the core concept of the triangle came out of Japanese Kosen Judo, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu turned it from an obscure trick into the guard's most emblematic submission, and that development was itself a collective effort rather than one person's flash of genius.

BJJ's single most important technical contribution to the move is pulling the trapped arm across your opponent's centreline. That adjustment visibly shrinks the space between shoulder and neck, sharply raising the pressure efficiency of the leg squeeze, and it is the biggest detail separating the modern triangle from the early judo version.

The triangle went global through mixed martial arts. The earliest documented triangle choke in an MMA bout is Jason Delucia's win over Scott Baker at UFC 2 on 11 March 1994; later that same year at UFC 4, Royce Gracie submitted Dan Severn, who outweighed him by nearly 40 kg, with a triangle. That classic win for the smaller man showed the world for the first time what "submitting someone with your legs" looked like in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and it turned the triangle into one of the art's signature techniques.

2. Mechanics: how two legs shut down the carotid and your opponent's own arm

The core mechanism of the triangle is compressing one carotid artery with the back of your own knee while your opponent's trapped arm and shoulder compress the other. Both sides of blood flow are blocked at once, and that is why the technique works so quickly; squeezing only one side rarely produces a real finish. Using the classic bottom-guard entry, the sequence looks roughly like this:

Within this sequence, pulling the arm across the centreline at step ③ is a detail you cannot skip. If the trapped arm simply stays beside your opponent's body without crossing it, an obvious escape gap remains, and this is exactly where beginners get stuck most often.

3. Setups and timing

The triangle has a handful of classic entry windows, and what they share is the instant one of your opponent's arms is forced inside your guard:

First, when your opponent postures up to break the guard. They shift weight forward and post one hand on the mat to build posture for a pass, while the other hand stays inside the guard, which is precisely the ideal one-in, one-out configuration.

Second, when a pass attempt fails and their weight tips too far forward. If they force a knee cut or a pressure pass without clearing the arm, that arm is stuck inside the guard with nowhere to go, and this is the golden moment for the triangle.

Third, in the scramble as they escape mount or back control. While escaping top control, turning or fighting to get out, an opponent's arm frequently crosses their own centreline without them meaning to, and a practised guard player can flow straight into the triangle.

The triangle also chains well with other submissions: when the lock fails and your opponent pulls the arm free, your leg position is often already ideal for switching directly into an armbar or an omoplata, which is why it is treated as a central node in the guard's attacking chain.

5. Common escapes and counters

The escape window for the triangle sits in the phase before the legs are fully locked and before the 90-degree angle has been taken, and the earlier you act the higher your success rate. The mainstream escapes:

First, posture up early and stack (stack to posture). The moment you feel the leg coming up toward your neck, straighten your torso, keep your head above your hips and drive your weight into your opponent, forcing their legs to open. This is the highest-percentage answer and the one worth drilling first.

Second, insert an arm to build a frame. Sliding your hand or forearm between your neck and their thigh creates a supporting frame that immediately eases the pressure and buys time for the posture work that follows. It only works if you complete it before the triangle is fully locked.

Third, the step-through counter. Once posture and frame are in place, step one leg through the gap between their legs to break the triangular structure itself, which usually kills the lock outright and returns you to a neutral exchange.

After the escape: what is next for both athletes

Once the defender lands a stack to posture or a step-through, they usually already own an advantageous angle pinning their opponent's legs, and can go straight into finishing the pass, flipping a passive situation completely on its head.

When the attacker's triangle gets neutralised, there is no need to abandon ship. The arm being pulled free is often still within reach of their control, and one change of grip flows into an armbar or omoplata, converting a choke threat into a joint-lock threat.

6. How often it appears in competition

The IBJJF and ADCC do not publish technique-level usage or success-rate statistics themselves. The figures below come from a statistics article on the third-party aggregator jiujitsu-news.com (accessed 2026/08; the site states its data covers over 7,500 submission records across events including the IBJJF World Championship 2023–2024, ADCC 2024 and UFC 2024), and should be treated as indicative rather than official: the article reports that the triangle finished at roughly 62% in the Gi at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship (28 of 45 attempts), but that the rate fell to about 28% at No-Gi events in 2022 (7 of 25 attempts), and to only about 19% at ADCC 2022 (3 of 16 attempts). The same site estimates the triangle accounts for roughly 9.5% of all submission attempts, with a combined success rate of around 38% across various elite events in 2024 and 2025. FAQ

Can white belts use the triangle choke?

Yes. The triangle is a choke, and like every other choke it carries no belt restriction, so it is legal from white belt onward in both Gi and No-Gi. What actually needs attention is the force and angle of the hip bump and leg throw on entry: work slowly, watch for your partner's tap, and never rush the entry so hard that they have no time to react.

Can I still drill triangles with short legs and tight hips?

It will be harder, but it is far from impossible. The triangle leans heavily on hip mobility and on whether your leg can travel around your opponent's neck to form the lock, and people who lack flexibility usually get stuck on not being able to hook the foot over. Most coaches recommend pairing the technique with hip flexor and hamstring mobility work, and prioritising the angle change (turning your body perpendicular to your opponent instead of muscling the head down). Once the angle is right, the leg-length requirement drops considerably.

How do I escape a triangle choke?

The earlier you deal with it, the better. Before the triangle is fully locked, posture up and keep your head above your hips so your opponent cannot pull it down; then insert a hand or forearm between your own neck and their thigh to build a frame and buy breathing room. If you are already squeezed tight, turn and move toward the trapped-arm side while driving your weight into your opponent, forcing their legs to open.
