Technically the Kimura is a shoulder lock, known in judo as ude-garami (entangled arm lock); the Kimura is the internally rotating version of that family. Getting it on breaks down into four steps:

Second, the hidden arm in turtle. The attacker threads a hand under the armpit, digs the hidden arm out, and links straight into the figure-four; this route also feeds naturally into a back take.
Third, the posted hand from closed guard. The bottom player often plants one hand briefly on the mat to change angles or sit up, and that instant is the standard moment for the top player to attack the Kimura, or to hit a Kimura sweep outright by using the shoulder lock's control to reverse the position.
In live rolling the Kimura is also seldom used in isolation. Typical chains include transitioning to an armbar when the Kimura is not tight enough, or using the Kimura grip to pin the arm while switching hands to attack the back.

Second, prying the grip. Once the figure-four is on, slide the fingers of your free hand into the gap under their thumb and use leverage to break the grip, then get out in the moment while they are regripping.
Third, turning to unload the shoulder. Roll your body toward the trapped side to change the angle at which the shoulder takes tension. This kills the Kimura's leverage, but you have to start it before the angle reaches its limit.
What the attacker has left after being defended
When they pry the grip and escape, they usually lose arm control and switch to framing, so the attacker can use the Kimura's existing control to flow into an armbar; the arm angles are close, which makes the transition cheap.
When they turn to unload the shoulder, their back or side is being exposed, so the attacker can abandon the shoulder attack and chase the back instead, turning their escape into a positional leak.
6. How Often It Shows Up in Competition
Under current IBJJF rules (checked for the 2026 season), the Kimura is legal at every adult belt level in both Gi and No-Gi, unlike heel hooks, neck cranks and certain leg locks that carry belt-level restrictions.
