Each of the four segments has its own personality, and the cruellest cut is saved for last: after 23.7 km of racing you still have 532 m of climbing left before you get home.

Compared with the 20K held the same day (70.2 m/km), the 30K is not simply longer, the whole three-dimensional load is raised. 35.2% of the distance counts as "boss climb" terrain (>20%), so roughly one step in three is pure vertical willpower.

1. Four brutal segments: anatomy of the course

The 30K route starts and finishes at Ruifang Junior High School and swings around the Diaoshan massif in one long arc. Four aid stations divide the course into four segments with completely different characters, and each one has its own way of hurting you:

🎯 Tactical takeaways on runnability

Only 27.8% of the course can genuinely be run, and those mellow stretches sit mainly in the opening kilometres from the start, the Jinguashi area around CP2, and the descent before CP3.

Core tactic: climb slowly to save the quads, run the flats to buy back time. If you run any part of the 756 m climb from SP to CP1, you will pay for it later. Power hike every steep pitch; the flats are your only window to make up time.

⚠️ Cut-off danger: only 1 h 46 min remains after CP3. The CP3→EP segment contains 532 m of climbing, which takes 1 h 42 min at cut-off pace (EPH ≈ 6.9 km/h), leaving a buffer of just four minutes. Any runner already behind schedule at CP3 should honestly assess whether finishing is realistic, rather than risk an accident from complete exhaustion on the final 6 km of steep terrain.

4. Gradient distribution: comparing the four segments

The gradient histogram shows the "population distribution" of slope across the whole course. The peak near zero represents flat running, while the fat tails on both sides show how much of the course is extreme.

🔍 What the gradient data tells us

The long tail on the positive (uphill) side extends past +40%, meaning a meaningful share of the course involves climbing at gradients above 40%, terrain steep enough that you are effectively scrambling on hands and feet. Several stone-step sections on the Diaoshan Historic Trail fall into this category.

The CP1→CP2 segment has the highest gradient standard deviation, reflecting the constant sharp ups and downs packed into those 9.74 km. It is the stretch that hits the knees and ankles hardest.

Compared with the 20K held the same day (33.9°C apparent at the start, 39°C in the afternoon), the 30K enjoyed relatively mild temperatures, but 85% relative humidity at the start means sweating becomes inefficient: evaporation is blocked and body heat has nowhere to go.

Hydration plan: at least 500 ml every 45 minutes, moving to every 30 minutes after 10 km. The window when apparent temperature exceeds 34°C (roughly 10:00–14:00) is the high-risk period for heat exhaustion, and it lines up exactly with the CP1→CP2 and CP2→CP3 segments for most runners.

🧢 Sun protection checklist

The Jinguashi stretch (CP1→CP2) is the most exposed part of the course, and whatever the forecast you need SPF50+ sunscreen, a cap, and sleeves or a long-sleeved sun shirt here. Many runners only think about reapplying at the CP1 aid station, by which point they are already up on the ridge, so apply thoroughly before the start.

7. Safety and bail-out options

Colours on the map below show the straight-line distance from each point to the nearest drivable road (including farm and forest roads, data from OpenStreetMap): the redder the segment, the harder it is to get yourself out. Checkpoints themselves sit at road junctions accessible by vehicle, so they normally fall in the green band.

🏃 Pacing strategy

Golden rule: pace the first three segments around what you need left in the tank after CP3. The 532 m climb from CP3 to the finish arrives after 23.7 km of racing, and every minute you overspend earlier is repaid several times over on that climb.

Suggested EPH by segment: SP→CP1 at 7.5 km/h (let the body warm up) → CP1→CP2 at 7.5–8.0 km/h (do not force the technical ground) → CP2→CP3 at 8.5 km/h (use the descent to claw back time) → CP3→EP everything you have at 8.0+ km/h (now is when you burn the reserves).

9. Personal verdict

The 30K is not simply "the 20K plus 10 km". The 20K is already a serious race; the 30K is a different weight class entirely. D+2,446 m inside 30 km is what many runners accumulate in a whole month of training, compressed into a single day.

Honest assessment: the final cut from CP3 to the finish is the most truthful piece of course design here. It refuses to let you relax at CP3. It knows you are at the bottom of the valley, and then it asks you to climb out. The combination of gradient and accumulated fatigue is what makes otherwise steady runners suddenly realise their earlier rhythm left no room for this section.

I would recommend this race to runners with at least five trail finishes of 20K or more and a stable EPH above 7.5 km/h. For a heavy mountain course like this, aim for monthly training volume of D+3,000 m or more in the 12 weeks before race day. This is not meant to scare you: it is because you deserve to arrive with legs that are genuinely ready to enjoy the view from the Diaoshan summit.
