The Disputed Origin, Full Mechanical Breakdown, Entries and Competition Record

The heel hook is widely regarded as the most destructive and most controversial leg lock in jiu-jitsu. It loads the knee with rotational torque, and the pain very often arrives after the damage has already been done. This guide starts with the unresolved question of who actually invented it, then works through the mechanics, the classic entries, the strengths and limits, the common escapes, and the full arc that took the technique from academy taboo to IBJJF legalisation in 2021 and to a signature weapon on the ADCC mats.

1. Origins: an invention story that spans half a century

The heel hook has no single, undisputed inventor. Two competing accounts circulate in jiu-jitsu history, and the argument is still a favourite among grappling historians.

Version one: the Ivan Gomes account. Ivan Gomes (born 25 December 1939 in Campina Grande, Brazil; died March 1990 of kidney failure) was a well-known vale tudo fighter from north-eastern Brazil in the 1950s through the 1970s. He trained under José Maria Freire (Zé Maria) and Agatangelo Braga, earned his black belt at around 21, and competed in vale tudo from 1954 to 1977. In the early 1960s he fought Carlson Gracie to a draw, and in the mid-1970s he travelled to Japan to compete for Antonio Inoki's New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he beat Japanese fighters including Strong Kobayashi and Osamu Kido. In this version, Gomes is credited as the creator of the heel hook as it is used today.

Version two: the Takeo Yano account. A second line of research traces the technique further back. The Japanese judoka Takeo Yano (born around 1909, died 1988) came out of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai in Kyoto, trained under Hajime Isogai, an early student of Jigoro Kano, and specialised in ne-waza. Yano arrived in Brazil in 1934 and taught at Club Naval in São Paulo and later at the Flamengo athletic club in Rio. He drew with George Gracie in 1935 and with Helio Gracie in 1936, then lost a second meeting with George Gracie later that same year, after which the two became rivals and collaborators. Yano also mentored Francisco Sá over many years, seeding the SAS Team jiu-jitsu lineage that survives to this day. In this version it was Yano who systematically introduced leg locks into Brazilian academies, making Gomes the man who later exported the system back to Japan and taught it to professional wrestlers, rather than its original inventor.

The two versions are not mutually exclusive, and together they form a fuller lineage

Read side by side, the two accounts sketch a single continuous transmission path: Yano brings leg locks into Brazilian academies in the 1930s → the technique passes through the generation of coaches around Zé Maria and reaches Gomes → Gomes turns it into his signature weapon on the vale tudo circuit in the 1960s and 1970s, then carries the system to Japan in the mid-1970s. That is precisely why the grappling community still calls the heel hook's origin an unsettled case: each version stands on its own evidence, yet together they describe a technical genealogy that crosses Japan and Brazil over nearly half a century.

2. Mechanical breakdown: leg control, heel grip and rotation

The most common controlling positions for the modern heel hook come from the ashi garami family, which includes 50/50, the saddle (inside sankaku) and outside ashi variations. The action itself splits into three phases:

The inside heel hook rotates the heel inward with the axis of rotation running through the knee, so it mainly threatens the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the meniscus. The outside heel hook rotates the heel outward, spreading more of the load into the ankle, so it mainly threatens the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and the ankle ligaments. The inside version is generally considered more destructive because the ankle has less range of motion in that direction, so more of the torque transfers straight into the knee.

3. Entries and setups

A heel hook is rarely launched out of nowhere. It usually grows out of a specific leg entanglement:

First, when an opponent's guard pass stalls with the legs still tangled. If they force their way past the guard without fully clearing the leg entanglement, the bottom player can often build an ashi garami on the spot and go straight into leg control.

Second, off sweeps from open guards such as De La Riva and the X-guard system. When a sweep fails or is countered, both athletes' legs are frequently still intertwined, and that is a classic moment to fight into 50/50 or the saddle and contest the heel.

Third, as a fallback after a passing attempt is defended. When a passing attempt is blocked by the opponent's legs, attacking the legs is usually a better investment than grinding forward. This is why, in modern black belt matches, guard passing and leg locking often trade places within a single exchange.

5. Common escapes and counters

The window for escaping a heel hook sits in the phase before the attacker has fully secured the heel grip and reached the finishing angle. The core principle is to move with the rotation rather than fight against it:

First, hide the heel. The moment you feel the heel being contested, rotate it under the opponent's hip and away from the range their palms can clamp on, so they never claim a complete lever.

Second, roll with the rotation to bleed off torque. If the opponent is already applying an outside heel hook, the correct escape is to roll actively in the direction of the rotation instead of resisting the other way. That lets the knee turn together with the body rather than absorbing the twist in one joint.

Third, break the entanglement pre-emptively. Before the ashi garami is finished, use your free leg to intervene and spoil their control angle, or pull the trapped leg out entirely, stopping the entanglement from ever forming.

What the defender should do immediately after escaping

Once you have bled off the torque or pulled the leg free, re-establish distance or a guard structure before you counter-attack. Leg entanglement exchanges usually leave both athletes temporarily out of position, and attacking too early is the fastest way to get dragged straight back into leg control.

If the escape is too late and the torque is clearly building, tapping early is always the only correct option. The injury risk of a heel hook is tightly coupled to how quickly you tap, and hesitation buys nothing back in recovery time.

6. Competition frequency and legality

Under the current IBJJF rules (effective 1 January 2021), heel hooks and knee reaping are banned at every belt level in gi competition. In no-gi they are open only to adult brown and black belts, with white, blue and purple belts excluded entirely. By contrast, ADCC has allowed the full submission arsenal at every level since its first event in 1998. The first heel hook finish in a major no-gi submission grappling event came at that 1998 ADCC, when Australia's Elvis Sinosic submitted the American Clarence Thatch.

The defining heel hook figure in ADCC history is the American Dean Lister, who competed in five ADCC main events (2003, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015) and accumulated at least nine submission wins by heel hook across them, including the 2003 absolute title, the 2011 99 kg title and a 99 kg silver medal in 2013. He also beat Jean Jacques Machado in the 2005 Superfight. Lister holds the most heel hook victories in ADCC history and in 2022 became the first American inducted into the ADCC Hall of Fame. His leg locking record directly inspired the New Zealand-born black belt coach John Danaher: after receiving his black belt under Renzo Gracie in 2002, Danaher began his systematic study of leg locks precisely because of what he saw in Lister's results. The Danaher Death Squad he produced (Gordon Ryan, Garry Tonon, Craig Jones, Nick Rodriguez and Nicky Ryan) collected a long list of IBJJF, ADCC and EBI titles from the late 2010s until the team disbanded in 2021, and was the decisive force in moving the heel hook from fringe technique to mainstream modern jiu-jitsu strategy. The IBJJF and ADCC organisations publish only placings and match results, not technique-level usage statistics, so there is no verifiable official figure for the percentage of submissions made up by heel hooks; the athlete records above are offered instead as concrete evidence of how often it appears.

7. Safety notes

The central risk of the heel hook is that the pain feedback lags behind the actual damage, in clear contrast to arm locks, which hurt first, injure second and give obvious warning. A case report on an MMA athlete documented a 32-year-old competitor sustaining a complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture together with medial collateral ligament damage from a heel hook, with the knee flexed and forced into valgus and internal rotation at the moment of injury. Safety rules for drilling heel hooks:

FAQ

Can white belts or blue belts use heel hooks in competition?

No. Under the current IBJJF rules (effective 2021), heel hooks are banned at every belt level in gi competition. In no-gi they are permitted only for adult brown and black belts, so white, blue and purple belts may not use them at all and doing so means disqualification. Submission-only no-gi events such as ADCC, EBI and Polaris allow them at every level.

What is the difference between an inside and an outside heel hook, and which is more dangerous?

The earlier you start the escape, and the less complete their control is, the higher your chance of getting out; once the angle is fully locked in, escaping becomes far harder.

Why is the heel hook singled out for special restrictions in most academies?

Because the damage it does to the knee often arrives before the pain does, and by the time a training partner feels it the ligaments may already be injured. That is clearly different from arm locks, which hurt first and injure afterwards. Most academies require an instructor to supervise heel hook drilling, and insist that the attacker apply slow, linear pressure and release completely the instant their partner taps.
